Dance: Finding A Dance Agent
June 23, 2008 12:34 pm Dance, EducationFinding a dance agent can mean the difference of a steady working career and one with sporadic bookings. Dance agents have only recently merged onto the scene, and they have set a new pace for helping dancers find work, and lead successful careers. It was only about ten years ago that most dancers did not have representation. They booked jobs by attending enormous casting calls and constant dance auditions.
Now, agents help dancers by helping them to find the auditions they are looking for. The dance agent trend has not yet evolved in all areas. It is common in Los Angeles for professional dancers to have agents. New York is not far behind with the number of agencies it offers to dancers. However, finding a dance agent does not mean dancers can sit back and relax. They actually have to work harder than ever.
They still have to work for themselves, attend auditions, and stay on top of their game. An agent cannot book a job for you, they merely get you the auditions. Finding a dance agent does not mean you have someone who will work for you. They work with you. It is your career, and you decide whether or not it is a successful one. You are responsible for keeping yourself in dance classes, eating healthy, and presenting a professional attitude. You must show up on time to auditions and do your best every time.
Steps for Finding a Dance Agent
Submissions are very important when you are looking for an agent. You can find agent dance listings on the Web, then focus on the few that most interest you. Your pictures should be at least three quarter shots, and they should be current and look like you. Your resume should also be up to date. Some professionals suggest submitting a package with your 8×10s and resume, and then following up in the following weeks with postcards. You can also send invitations out to agents for any live performances you are doing.
